Episode Review

I am become Death – Review

57 Comments 07 October 2008

Is there anyone who didn’t feel a little bit lost with this episode? I’m left with lots of questions and I am definitely confused. The line between good and bad has become even more blurry. At least, now we know Sylar’s real power is. Now let’s take a look at what has happened in this episode.

I’ll start with Mohinder, probably the most stupid scientist that has ever lived on TV universe. Since he has injected himself with the formula, he has totally become a creep and his situation isn’t getting any better. In the future scenes, he becomes even creepier and doesn’t want to show his face.

Tracy pays a visit to his creator, Dr. Zimmerman. He reveals that Niki, Tracy and Barbara are triplets whom separated at birth. He also informs that she got her superpowers by DNA manipulation, not at birth. This leaves us with the question are there any other heroes that we know who got powers with the help of Company. Later on she attempts suicide but Nathan flies and saves her. Now both are aware of each other’s power, they kiss and cuddle and in the future we see them as a couple.

The rift between Ando and Hiro grows. Still, Ando helps Hiro to escape from the cell but Haitian captures and takes them to Angela. She asks about the formula. When Hiro tells her that he has lost it, she sends them to get the key to solve the mystery behind formula. The key is Adam Monroe, who wasn’t happy to see Hiro once again.

Let’s come to the hard part. Last week, Future Peter took off with Present Peter. He takes them to the future where anyone can purchase abilities and the line between right and wrong is blurry. Peter –both future and present- seems to be on one side while Claire, Knox, Daphne and Haitian on the other one. Claire Clan aims to kill Peter whom they call a ruthless murderer. On the other hand Peter wants to form an army with people who have abilities. At their first encounter, Claire manages to kill Future Peter which I though was impossible since Peter has her power and she’s IMMORTAL. Present Peter escapes and visits Sylar.

Sylar is living happily with his son Noah at the Bennet house. He acts friendly towards Peter. Peter, with all his confusions, asks Sylar about his power and tells him that he needs to get it in order to save the world. Sylar warns Peter about the hunger he feels, and consequences of his power. Now we know what Sylar can really do, to understand how things work. Since Peter and Sylar are brothers, they both have a similar ability. Does this mean Nathan got his ability after he was born? His power isn’t anything like the other two.

While they were exchanging powers, Claire, Knox and Daphne barge in. Sylar doesn’t seem to have a side but Claire definitely holds a grudge against him. During the battle Knox kills Noah; Sylar goes atomic, explodes and kills 200,000 people.

Somewhere between these events, we learn that Daphne is the woman from the drawings that Matt saw in Africa. In the future they are married with a child. Molly also lives with them. After Daphne escapes from the explosion, she goes back home to Matt, and dies in his arms. (Another drawing from previous episode.)

Peter and Claire also survive and Claire tortures Peter for every single person that has died because of the explosion. Nathan comes in and stops her. Nathan understands that Peter doesn’t trust him, so he asks Peter to read his mind. While doing so, things get out of control and Peter gives into the hunger and becomes the monster he always thought Sylar was. Btw, after Haitian leaves the room Peter can use all his powers, but he can’t heal? Why didn’t the scars immediately disappear? That was kind of silly.

Back in the present day, Matt wakes up from his future dream and starts following a turtle as his spirit totem that will guide him to change the future. Really, a turtle? Does this mean Matt’s stay in Africa will become Hiro’s boring Japan story arc? I hope not because I really really like Matt and his ability is too cool to be spent at a desert.

Awesome review dude, I thought this episode was really really good probably one of the best of the season so far. Knowing what Sylars true ability is was really good and also when he killed Nathan that was pretty awesome.

I really did enjoy this episode, too. One thing i think is getting out of control is Peter’s character though. Think about this…He is gaining way too much power. It is getting to the point that it is getting kind of ridiculous. I dare say, if they keep this up, i will find his character boring. Yeah, thats peter, he does everything. So eventually the only way the writers will be able to take it (and in my opinion the only way to keep it interesting with his character) is to make Peter the Villain. It will take everyone including Sylar to stop him. Which of course could lead to his character’s storyline ending. (and no one wants that). So please, slow down Peter’s character. its for his own good. Being a Pimp is cool, but not that much of a pimp.

After this episode i think, that claire is immortal. A explosion like this would destroy her entire body, and her head would be not only cut off, it would be splatterd into small particles :) .

So i would say that claire is immortal, and the others wo absorbed her power kinda just got the self healing part :)

One thing I am having a hard time with is the scene at the Bennet house. Sylar and Peter have so many powers compared to Daphne, Claire and Knox, yet they were not able to defend themselves. WTF!! Why not? And Sylar did not have to go nuclear, they could have given Noah some of Peter, Claire or Sylar’s blood to bring him back to life.

The reason Peter died is because the Haitian was there. If you remember when present Peter was running away, he passed the Haitian. That would obviously cancel out anyone’s powers…thus enabling Peter (past or future) and Claire-bear to be killed.

I really enjoyed this review but i think a few points were off.

Claire was able to kill Peter because she shot him in the head. Once an object is inside the brain of an “evolved human” it cant access its abilities (Season 1: When Claire had a tree branch in her head, as well as when Peter was dead after his fight with Sylar… ). She also mentioned this at a later point in the episode.

Peters wounds did heal after the Haitian left the room. The blood was still around though. (The blood has always stayed outside the body as only the skin closes. I personally think this helps it keep “realistic”).

Sorry for my English, I’m Austrian :P

  7. Sy says:

First off, i dont know how any heroes fan could not realize by now what sylars power is. so this episode didnt really do much there. Yeah and people need to remember, the Hatian cancels out powers. and he was at the scene where future peter died. Why didnt future peter heal when the Hatian left the room after he was taken to the company headquarters? Claire probably did what she said she was gonna do, and either shot him in the back of the head so the bullet stays lodged in, or just simply lodge some arbitrary item in his head. I do think they forgot to heal present peter when his powers returned, buuut that can be negated simply by the fact that even though the blood is still there the wound
    itself couldve already healed.

In all honesty, Im getting sick and tired of them making Hiro be a moron, they make as if peter is better at using his power than he is. its ludicrous, and yeah i know they have to make him seem stupid, cuz hes so powerful, but again look at peter. they need to make Hiro as legendary as he should be during the damn season not just in the end as usual.

Speaking of characters getting shafted, the Haitian needs to rock someone. Like i dont understand how the Haitian straight up destroys peter in the second season (which he always should) and then just becomes a punching bag in all other cases. I mean the guy is a trained agent, makes any hero a normal citizen and can snatch your memories out of your face. But every scene hes in, its just like o look at me ive got the haitian backing me up,o no someone knocked him out. just dumb

I really wished we wouldve seen a more brilliant display of powers out of an angry future sylar, but i love the guy regardless. and lastly, theyve got explain knox’s ability; so people get scared, he feeds off their emotion, just to become nikki? how stupid. hes gotta have more than that and reading hayden’s bad acting as fear.

It was the worst episode of “Heroes” I’ve ever seen. When Sylar’s son died, i didn’t even feel sorry for him. It’s impossible, I cry on every sad movie, and that ep. should make me cry to death! So tell me, who was that moron, who create this disaster: writer or director? Mr. Kring, you must fire them or show will lose another milion of viewiers.

I’m sorry for possibly mistakes, i’m not a english native speaker XD.

  9. petrolpetrelli says:

The post by Sy is hilarious. This episode felt very fast paced and was difficult to keep up. I do worry about where the show is headed. Some things are getting ridiculous but there are still some very cool aspects of the show. I love the way Peter came back and jumped to grab sylar by the throat and had him up against the wall. The dialogue is pretty sweet at times too. Great job Heroes writers!

  10. EVIL OTTO says:

i loved the episode yesterday.i thought it was insane when i saw sylars son die.

    to Sophie
knox had his son!i dont think it would have been wise to use there powers. And i understand why he went nuclear..He was pissed as hell thats why. just like ted

  11. Fimbs says:

I also don’t think that Sylar meant to go nuclear, he was experiencing uncontrollable emotions. There is a link between powers and adrenaline, after all, so it makes sense.

  12. ladylicorish says:

I don’t know how I feel about last night some things were good others bad. Yeah everyone should know by now what Sylar could do it wasn’t like they had to spell it out.
And how they keep some people so stupid its ridiculous. I mean Mohinder is painful to watch because you know he is the most retarded character there is. He will continue to make the wrong choices everytime. As well as Peter for how much he knows he should be able to figure out somethings himself. Why would I not trust the future version on myself or act like it couldn’t be possible? He knows its possible and yet he always so shocked when things happen. Not to mention Nathan can he get a life and realize he is not saving anyone by being in office. Nothing good can come about from him in politics.
I just feel that some of the plot we are just supposed to accept was a made a little too simple and rushed or the other extreme overdone.
I also agree the Haitian should be kickin butt, but he does’t do anything. I don’t know I just hope things better better.
However positives: I love how you find out that Sylar and Peter are related which makes me think that somehow their mom may have been the mother of a few them or the woman in the initial start up company may have spawned all the main children with powers.

  13. Kane says:

Like Sy said, I’m baffled at the fact that there are people who STILL dont know what Sylar’s power is. There is an ENTIRE EPISODE about his power, in season 1. Its called “Six Months Ago”. Go watch it.

Oh, and Claire is becoming a real bitch. Shes just annoying and mad at everyone, and immortal to boot, so no one can shut her up proper.

And when Sylar’s son died I started feeling all tingly inside, cause I imagined him going postal with his entire specter of powers upon everyone around him, raging wildly. Turning the house inside out. Literally. So I was sorta dissappointed when he just punched the guy a few times and then blew up.

  14. feed me a stray cat says:

this was THE BEST episode of the entire series. we had our first hardcore super-fight.. mohinder’s story arc is actually going somewhere, as opposed to “boo hoo my father hated me and he’s dead”.
the mohinder comment in this review is something i completely disagree with, he’s a DYNAMIC character. one of the major themes of this season is the theme of victims standing up for themselves and trying to change things. claire and mohinder have been nothing but punching bags and story objects thus far, now they’re becoming villains and mad scientists (respectively).

  15. feed me a stray cat says:

    @ Kane,
“So I was sorta dissappointed when he just punched the guy a few times and then blew up.”

    not just punches, NUCLEAR punches!
