You’ve been wondering, we’ve been wondering, and you have to figure that Niki, Claire, HRG/Noah, Matt, et al, were wondering, too. At the conclusion of the Kirby Plaza skirmish on Heroes’ first-season finale, why didn’t Peter just fly his explosive self up, up and away, instead of making Nathan take one for the team, as well? Presented by TV Guide with that burning question, series creator Tim Kring pauses before saying, “You know, theoretically you’re not supposed to be thinking about that.”
When assured that viewers are, Kring confirms that â€â€? as many have theorized â€â€? radioactive Peter’s other powers were “incapacitated” at that pivotal moment, and “somewhere in there is the explanation” for having Nathan grab his bro and do the “flying man!” thing. “But the real explanation is that we wanted Nathan to show up and [save the day]!”
“Yes, I will admit that there’s a very tiny window of logic there,” Kring continues with a laugh. “But what can I say? It’s requires the proverbial suspension of disbelief.” Which, when airing opposite 24, a season finale is certainly allowed. â€â€? Matt Webb Mitovich, with additional reporting by Michael Logan

How does it require suspension of disbelief? We’ve seen Peter lose control of his powers before, and every time the nuke power started to go off he went into full panic mode and focused all his concentration on not going nuclear. I thought it was pretty well explained.
actually I think the biggest mystery of the finale is if Nathan survived (flew away etc) or not). It makes sense that Peter couldn’t control his other powers while blowing up. You have to admit, he was under a bit of pressure ….
I have been saying this since the moments after the finale, when all the haters chimed in with “Peter could have flown himself.”
Sure, maybe he could have, but it would have defeated the whole point of the story (and the season) for Nathan not to come in and do what is right.
And I believe that it is a mistake if Nathan is still alive. The ending was powerful because Nathan was sacrificing not just the presidency, but himself for his brother. At least that is what I took away from it.
IMO the biggest mysteries are:
-Who can see Molly Walker when she thinks about him (and is much worse than Sylar?)
-What is Charles Devaux’s role in this, what powers does he have? Can he send visions to Peter, even beyond the grave?
-What are Grandma Petrelli’s powers?
-Sylar is loose: are we f*cked? Why didn’t Hiro slice his head off one and for all?
I dont think that Nathan should live. I mean, through out the season I’ve been all mad at him for allowing for his brother to blow up but then on the finale it seemed like everything came together. I love the fact that Nathan went into it as though he were going to die and I feel like if he survived, it wouldn;t be near as powerfull. I mean, that scene made me sob uncontrollably and it would just be weird if he survived.
I found it funny that they didn’t ask Molly where Nathan and Peter were after Peter’s explosion. Also, how is Claire so calm and ready to move on 5 minutes after her best/closest friend/uncle and biological dad blow up? They don’t even try to figure out what happened? Also, arent the police a little suspcious about all of this?
ok…people we know that pasadar is signed for next year that doesn’t mean nathan survived…what if candice is posing as nathan by mama petrelli’s order to continue the plan they had
Should they in all cheesiness decide to keep Nathan alive, they should write in that he got cancer from all that radiation. At least not much suspension of disbelief is required there.
Still shit. Sincerely and if they keep Nathan alive it will show how cheezy and commercial they have become. Sacrificing good story lines to keep….
i think that nathan survived because peter can do more than one power at a time. they probably flew up and peter told nathan to let him go and leave. but nathan refused and then peter made a speech and nathan agreed. then peter flew by himself while nathan fled the scene.
yes peter can do that because in the episode with claude training peter. peter started using multiple powers but couldnt control them. thats why claude knocked him out. but peter didnt need to be knocked out because he was gonna explode. by now im sure peter at least learned how to use at least 2 powers at the same time.
and thats how both survive.

I don’t think peter can use two powers at the same time because of what Mohinder said about his powers. He described peter as being similar to a chameleon, his cell structure changed to match that of people around him. If this is the case, his cell structure could only support one power at a time.

I am still frustrated with the big speech about Peter’s unconditional love being what saves the world – it is his brother’s love and sacrifice that save the world. Also, the cheerleader failed to shoot Peter at the last minute which is why Nathan felt the need to fly Peter away, so why is she proposed to be the one Peter had to save in order to “save the world”? I think the ending was contrived and left more questions than answers (and not in a good way). I was disappointed that Claire couldn’t go thru with their big plan, and that the show down between Sylar and Peter was pretty lame.
Saving the Cheerleader is what Future Hiro thought had to happen to stop the bomb going off. And while it didn’t turn out exactly how Future Hiro thought it would, technically, he was right. If Peter hadn’t saved Claire, then we wouldn’t have ended up where we were in the finale.
It is his unconditional love that makes him special. I would imagine this will play out further in future seasons. However, if Nathan had allowed him to explode in the city, Peter would have killed millions of innocent people. And as we saw in “Five Years Gone,” that guilt changes him into someone very cold and uncaring. So Nathan did what he did not just to save the city, but to save Peter, as well.
Quite frankly, the only place I felt the finale came up short was explaining Nikki/Jessica. I understand the power, and I know they both have access to it. But I don’t understand the split personality thing. That was the most contrived part of the whole series, if you ask me.
