Major HEROES spoilers from San Diego ComicCon

57 Comments 26 July 2008

Episode 3-01 ‘A second coming’
premiered today at the 2008 San Diego ComicCon.

The ODI and Newsarama so far posted a report, and -obviously- the’re stuffed with spoilers, including who shoot Nathan, if Nathan is alive or not, if Mohinder has special powers or not, who’s Saylar going to… well, you got the point…click on ‘continue…’ to read the spoilers

The episode picks up at the end of the abbreviated Season Two, with the attempt on Nathan Petrelli’s life. Nathan flat-lines on the operating table — but then he comes back to life, pale as a Casper and twice as grateful.

Then we learn that it was Nathan’s brother Peter – from the future – who came back in time to kill Nathan, to prevent him from revealing to the world the existence of super-powered people. Matt figures it out, and gets banished to the desert for his troubles.

Hiro is in Japan, a titan of industry running his family’s company. He tells Ando he’s bored, that after saving the world — twice — he’s a man without a quest. And right on cue, he’s delivered a dvd with a message his father recorded for him before his death.

The message? On the dvd, Hiro’s dad Kaito Nakamura (George Takei) explains that he is now the protector of a secret that, if it falls into the wrong hands, could destroy the world. It’s in his safe, and he’s instructed to NEVER open the safe.

“It’s half of a formula…It’s the light, to combat darkness,” Nakamura says in the recording.

After Hiro and Ando open the safe (and get chided for it posthumously by Hiro’s father). Season 3’s new villain, a blonde named Daphne, AKA Speedster (Brea Grant) shows up and steals the formula.

Sylar’s back! He shows up and terrorizes Claire in her home in a scene obviously written by someone with affection for the “Scream” horror franchise. Their scenes together were the highlights of the episode, simultaneously tense and funny.

“I know you’re scared Claire,” Sylar says. “I would be too if I were here with someone like me.”

Claire stabs him in the heart with a huge kitchen knife. But Sylar overpowers her and then proceeds to pull a Hannibal Lector and cut the top of her head off and then pokes around in her brain and absorbs her power.

As he walks out, Claire asks Sylar why he didn’t kill her.

“You can never die, Claire, “ he said. “I guess now, neither can I.”

Like Matt the intrepid cop, Niki Sanders gets short shrift in the episode. She shows up only briefly in a hotel room, scantily clad, with a political figure (played by Bruce Boxleitner) who’s interested in the newly-evangelical Nathan.

Nathan, you see, after his near-death experience has seen the light. “We are all connected. Save ourselves. Save the World.”

Meanwhile, Suresh makes a breakthrough. After watching Maya’s powers manifest themselves, he determines that the genetic building blocks for powers lie in the adrenal glands, and triggered by bursts of adrenaline.

He sees the opportunity to create superheroes on demand, with specific powers. Maya thinks it’s going against nature, and that he should destroy it.

But Suresh juices himself anyway, and wouldn’t you know he gave himself super-strength??

The episode had two HUGE reveals.

Hiro, curious to see what the future holds if they don’t get the formula back, jumps forward and sees himself betrayed and struck down by a suddenly super-powered Ando! We get a quick glimpse of the potential Apocalypse as well.

Then, after Angela warns Future Peter that he’s messed up the timeline with his actions, we learn that Present-Day Pete has been trapped inside the body of a prisoner in Level 5 of the company, the same place HRG is incarcerated.

Fade to black, episode ends.

    I can’t wait!

Something I read in another fan’s rewrite of the episode cracked me up pretty hard:

(During the scene where Sylar’s after Claire)
Claire hides in a closet and Sylar can’t get to her because his power doesn’t work on closets.

Sylar: Claire come out of the closet!
Claire: I’m not in the closet.

Sorry, random South Park reference there, anyway this looks great, now that Sylar can regenerate maybe he won’t decide to always kill thinking it’s a kill or be killed situation, but I’m fairly certain he’s still going to be his own brand of evil. I remember the future Sylar didn’t even want to have all the powers, he took what he could use to help him get to Claire because he really wanted the immortality that regeneration gives. It’s a shame though, if all he has to do is look at a person’s brain to figure out their power he could have gotten all his powers without killing anyone with access to current brain imaging technology.
    :(

i agree with DuffMan , as i said before i dont think its the right time for sylar to get claires power, it takes away the essence of the show, he is too equal to peter now, that was the edge peter had over sylar. I think the company or angela was forced to give away claires location, in order for him to get her powers (knowing that sawing off her head wont kill her)or he found it on mohinders computer in the last episode , and they used this in ordr for him to get the escpaed villains, being that he is the only one who could stop them, seing that peter is going to be detained in the level 5 prison, so Sylar probably accepts offer in turning good for a short period of time, so he can get is hands on some cool new powers, thus puting peter on the back burner as star and most special of this show. In fact Sylar seems to have superior abilitys and more control of powers than peter. I dont know how peter is going to become the most special again, unless he acquires a very rare and extremely powewrful ability from someone, to give him the edge and stardom again.

  3. Noah Baudee says:

Ed, Sylar’s rusty. It’s been a while since he’s been active, so it may take a while before he gets back into the swing of things. He’s also been humbled. He’s been powerless for an entire season, and vulnerable in a way he’s never been in the past. He’s also had time to think about how he killed his own mother (not even for power, in cold blood — something he’s avoided, remember his encounter with Ando?).

I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re starting to see a new Sylar, not a “Good Sylar” but not a more HRG-like Sylar, especially since the villains no longer make Sylar “special”. He’s actually pretty boring compared to some of the villains that have been revealed. He might make a treaty with the heroes to not kill them, and fight with them against the villains, but if he does kill a villain, the villain’s power will be his as the spoils of war.

  4. Noah Baudee says:

DuffMan, you have to understand that the show has changed fundamentally. Not only are there worse people out there than Sylar, but anyone can now become a hero. Sylar really isn’t that significant any more. Giving him Claires power at least makes him a bit more relevant.

Remember, in the the Season 1 dark future, Mohinder was in a panic because the mutation was spreading throughout the population?

Perhaps in season 1, “the formula” got into the drinking water and there was mass panic so the season 1 dark future will likely happen. The only difference is that the New York explosion won’t happen. Ironically, that explosion might actually have been a lot less significant than the formula leak.

Season 2 avoided this future by simply killing everyone off via the plague. Perhaps the virus that affects heroes didn’t mutate into the population as was believed. Perhaps, the general population was affected precisely because the “hero-making formula” was leaked into the environment along with the virus (which was leaked earlier).

In essense, both season 1 and season 2 haven’t been avoided. They’re still going to happen in another form that’s more deadly than the first two. Linderman may have been right after all. There are so many clues were hidden in those dark futures, that I’m surprised I didn’t see them earlier.

    Sylar is small potatoes.

My guess is that the whole thing is only going to be resolved when Kaito’s formula (which I guess is the “hero-neutralizing formula”) is found and gets out into the general population and society is forced to be less cavaliere when it comes to playing God through eugenics.

  5. INTJ says:

Holy crap have you seen the latest webisode? Echo in level 5; I bet he gets free! I can’t wait to see more! This show F____ING ROCKS! Finally they are taking this somewhere exciting – I hope Peter bumps into a lot of people this year!

  6. INTJ says:

And has anyone (Duffman) considered that a regenerative person can be chopped up into pieces and then separated – can’t regenerate if your head is not attached – otherwise claire’s little toes would have grown another claire when she cut that off.

  7. Sylar says:

INTJ, how do you know dark haired Claire is from the future? She might be toe regenerated Claire? Wouldn’t you be messed up if you knew you were grown from a toe? ;-)

  8. Gh0sT says:

From the Season 3 sneak peak clip in the Season 2 DVD it shows for a brief second the script and it tell us that Future Peter shot Nathan.

For a pic of the script.

  9. Tpain says:

I’m kinda pissed at Sylar getting Claire’s power. It was bad enough for Adam to have them but now Sylar. That’s 3 now regeneration is old. I pray that Sylar gets really full of himself and thinks he can take the company so they can infect his ass again and put a bullet through his head. It’s either that or the formula that Hiro is responsible for will make him normal again. I’m all for villians but I’m really over Sylar.

Oh, and since they added that line for Sylar not eating brains becasue its gross…are they going to tell us what he did with his early victims brains..since he’s not eating it? Also, all the powers from the individuals he’s stolen so far are gone..he’s only got TK now, right? What’s to say he won’t lose any other powers he’s accumulated?

  10. Siva says:

Tpain…I dont think sylar just has telekenisis as his only power. After he got his powers back im sure the others like enhanced hearing, cryokenisis, radiation, memory, precognition, liquification. It would be pretty bad if they took away all the powers he had collected before his infection to be lost. Just doesnt sound right. I reckon sylar will get caught by future peter just as he leaves the bennet’s house after acquiring claire’s ability. Maybe thats why we see him in the company’s cell.

  11. Xiox Xioh says:

Yeah, they said Sylar will retain his powers from before the virus, but won’t have Candice’s power and most likely not Alejandro’s either, because he was infected when he tried to take theirs. But he will retain all of the others.

  12. DuffMan says:

I really hope that Angela is not talking with Sylar when she says ” you need to be strong for whats to come” I cant stand the idea that Sylar might be a good guy this season, He needs to just be after the same thing as the Heroe’s like Peter arrives too late and finds one of the escaped prisoners with a sawed off skull cap lol. and then he really has to rush to try and catch them. I bet Molly Walker comes really handy this season.

  13. Xiox Xioh says:

I don’t know if Sylar would be necessarily good, he might just let the company use him so that he may gain power. He would be doing the right thing for selfish reasons, he might be morally gray instead of evil. I mean that’s all he ever really was to begin with, he just wants to be “special” and gain other’s powers.

  14. ms.anonymous says:

yeah, i hope sylar’s just being morally gray and not become a good person throughout the whole season. otherwise, its gonna be a bore..

  15. Ant says:

    This all is really good…

Back to clair not dying… simply he cuts of the skull not brain, brain stays untouched so they can still comunicate.

Imagine Sylar’s exitment (Look clair I’m learning your power and we can still have a chat, Isn’t that great?) Haha
Great, and finaly we know what he does to the brains… My thinking is that in season 1 and 2 he was taking the brains home (some other quiet place) when you can see in episiode 2 of season 1 he had these brain related books on his table and then Eden that girl that came with Mohinder says ‘ I see someone does reading before sleep’… So basicaly Sylar; kills, takes the brain home, study it, and then either throws it away ofr flashes it down the toilet undamaged.

Simple! And I think that now we would see more of Clair and Sylar action in the group.

    Back to Niki, why is it so quiet about her? We know that new personality will emerge… But I still hope that Niki will take over finally. Plus the new power… whoah… This can be explained as follow;
Niki’s power could not be a super strenght after all… its more like absorbing the powers or producing new ones everytime as new personality emerge… Remember Jessica? by saying you need to stop her she kind of passes her power to niki at the same moment leaving her for ever, like a ghost manifestation.

Sooo I wonder what will our Ali come up with this time… I really have no idea what the new power would be… :(

And Nathan… I am really willing to see Niki and Nathan together fighting for greater good!

OMG Mohinder will now go bad… wow, kind of surprising with pluses and minuses as we all realise. He seems to become something between Hulk and Dr. Doom, That would be interesting… hmm.
And obviously Im waiting for season 3 premiere like every each of you and am trying not to think about heroes… if I do I just think about the possible storyline.
