Zachary Quinto Interview

Wizard Entertainment, made a interview with Zachary Quinto aka. Sylar or we may say Gabriel Gray.

How was security on set for the episode where it was revealed you were the actor playing Sylar?
QUINTO: [Laughs] Did you ask how security on set was? It’s nice to think there would be security, but no. Everyone at the show I think was really relieved to know finally who was playing the character, because at that point, there were a couple of times earlier in the seasonâ€â€?in episode three or five I think, the early part of the season before I even got castâ€â€?that you had to see Sylar. So they used a number of different stunt doubles who came in and they just shot around it. They shot them from behind and you never saw a face. You’d just see them running down the hallway or something. So for the first couple of days when I showed up to work, people were like, “Wait, you’re the real guy? You’re really playing this character?” I was like, “Yeah. I really am.”
I think there was a fair amount of expectation of like, “Who is this going to be?” They set that up for the audience and I think that was also sort of built in for the cast and the crew, to a certain extent, as well. It was like, “Who is this shadowy figure who is going to emerge and try to kill us all?” But aside from that, there were no extra precautions because people weren’t aware we were shooting that stuff at that time. No one really knew. I think it was probably about, wow, maybe a month or a month a half in. Well, I started out at the beginning of October. So I was about a month into it when there started to be some rumblings about who was going to be playing this role, but there was a lot of discrepancy and no one was really exactly sure. But it worked out well, I think.

Sylar vs. Eden

What’s it been like since it was revealed you were the actor playing Sylar? Has anyone recognized you?
QUINTO: Definitely. I’ve certainly gotten recognized in conjunction with the role and the show. It hasn’t been too invasive. It hasn’t really been fundamentally changing my experience or my life. I mean, I’ve been on shows before for which I’ve been occasionally recognized and I certainly don’t mind that, but I went to the movies the other day and I was at the ticket window and I was waiting for a friend. I turned around to scan the lobby if my friend was there yet, and there was this couple who was standing like maybe 10 feet away from me. As soon as I turned around, they both started cracking up and laughing and waving at me. I was like, “Hello.” From like 10 or 15 feet away the guy yells, “Don’t eat our brains!” I was like, “I won’t. I’m just seeing ‘Casino Royale.’”
That kind of stuff is pretty funny. It’s all very innocuous so far and I’m certainly happy to engage people who want to talk about the show, because it really does generate a lot of interest. I like that. I mean, I think it’s great to be a part of something that influences pop culture the way this show does, because I think it actually has something good to say. I think it really has something substantial at its core. So I certainly don’t mind engaging people in conversation about it.

What’s your take on Sylar?
QUINTO: Well, he keeps evolving with every episode, which is the best part about it all, the part that I love the most about the job and about the role. Sylar’s really awakening to an awareness of his power, and what gets awakened in him is a darkness and is a hunger, a thirst for power and ultimately for blood and the pursuit of that power.
So I think when Chandra comes to talk to him in that first scene in the watch shop, it’s like something switches there. He finishes that watch that he’s been working on for seven years, and it just starts to work when the door opens. I think that’s really indicative of a huge shift in his life, a huge chapter that’s opening and certainly one that’s closing as well. Combine that with his awareness on how to extract this powerâ€â€?and we don’t know explicitly how he does that yet. I certainly have ideas and have had conversations with the producers about it, but we’re not in any sort of hurry to give that away. I’m not. I know they’re not. So in the meantime, we’re working with our own ideas and our own sort of perspective on what that is, what that process is.

Speaking of upcoming episodes, Tim Kring told me “no four walls can really hold Sylar.” Does Sylar escape? Is there a bigger picture you can tease?
QUINTO: Well, I think the one thing I can say is he definitely shows up in places where you would least expect him in the next section, or the next sort of act of the season, which has been really exciting for me because it’s also places I wouldn’t have expected to show up. It’s great because I think Sylar is going to keep people guessing, which is what I really, really love about it. You think you might have a read on him and how he goes about his path of power hunting, but then he surprises every time. Every time you turn a corner there’s always a bit of a new twist. That’s just about as much I feel comfortable giving away.
Horn-Rimmed Glasses doesn’t give up easily, and especially once he realizes what I’ve done when we come back after the jump, I’m definitely paying for the actions at the end of [the midseason finale] when I killed Eden, and that lasts for a little bit. So that’s really what people will see right away after the hiatus, the sort of ramifications of my actions in killing Eden and the consequences of that. They’re exacted from me pretty hard by HRG, but then, like you were saying, nothing can hold me down.

When I was on set, they were shooting a scene at the Bennet house and Claire had to pretend her memory was erased.

QUINTO:
Yeah. See, like that’s awesome. It’s like tricking people and turning it back on themselves. So I’m sure Sylar wouldn’t mind spending some time at the Bennet house.

Is that some foreshadowing?
QUINTO: I don’t know. [Laughs]

I’m a huge fan of Sylar and subsequently have become a HUGE FAN OF ZACHARY QUINTO. In the region where I live they didn’t premiere the shows he worked on before (I heard he had acted in “Charmed” but I couldn’t see that episode).
Mr. Quinto makes Sylar, Sylar. The way he moves makes his character so believable. I wouldn’t have anyone else play Sylar. The wickedness, the pain, the need to be unique and the amount of potential that Zachary Quinto puts into his character is phenomenal. I hope Mr. Quinto gets to be in more shows in the future because he is a SUPERB actor.

I have always been in awe of Zachary Quinto’s acting prowess, and his convincing performance as the power-hungry Sylar has definitely won me over to the dark side. Seriously, he makes that character his own, and no one could portray it as well as he does. =)

Dude, I LOVE Zachary Quinto. He’s an amazing actor!!!!!!!!! It’s terrifying how well he plays Sylar. So, So, SO unbelievably scary. It’s almost like there IS no Zachary Quinto, only Sylar. I LUV IT! I can even see the evil in his eyes. ( although that could just be my overactive imagination…… but still.) Dude, Zachary Quinto is AWESOME! plus he’s totally H-O-T- HOT! XD ( I’m a little crazy. don’t mind me.)
