‘Sopranos,’ ‘Heroes’ top list of Emmy nods

5 Comments 23 July 2007

“The Sopranos could dominate its last Emmy Awards. Or could it be foiled by the fresh-faced kids of “Heroes?

The nominations announced Thursday for the 59th annual awards ceremony in September give the edge to HBO’s landmark drama, whose 15 nominations were the most for any series. But the sci-fi sensation “Heroes earned an impressive eight bids for its first season, including best drama.

Cutting-edge shows dominated the comedy series category, with “Ugly Betty leading the charge with 11 nominations. Medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy, after a rocky year that saw the firing of Isaiah Washington over his use of an anti-gay slur, scored 10 nominations, including a best-drama bid and supporting nominations for four cast members.

Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer) and Jon Cryer (Two And a Half Men) helped announce the nominations Thursday morning in a brief ceremony in Los Angeles. And they were both nominated; Sedgwick for lead actress in a drama and Cryer for supporting actor in a comedy.

“She’s all ruffled. She didn’t know that was coming! Cryer said of Sedgwick, who flubbed her lines after announcing her own nomination.

The made-for-TV movie “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee led all nominees with 17 bids.

In the reality-competition categories, the leading nominee with eight bids was “Dancing With the Stars, followed by “American Idol with seven.

Altogether, HBO was the most-recognized network with 86 bids, followed by ABC with 70, NBC with 69, CBS with 44, Fox with 28, and PBS with 24.

The Emmy Awards will be broadcast Sept. 16 by Fox from the Shrine Auditorium.

Amoung the Heroes Emmy nominations:

# Supporting Actor in a Drama Series: William Shatner, “Boston Legal, ABC; T.R. Knight, “Grey’s Anatomy, ABC; Masi Oka, “Heroes, NBC; Michael Emerson, “Lost, ABC; Terry O’Quinn, “Lost, ABC; Michael Imperioli, “The Sopranos, HBO.

# Drama Series: “Boston Legal, ABC; “Grey’s Anatomy, ABC; “Heroes, NBC; “House, Fox; “The Sopranos, HBO.

Masi Oka on TV Guide: “Kensei is NOT Japanese”

5 Comments 18 July 2007

TVGAs we all know this week’s edition of TV Guide (in stores Thursday, and if you are a subscriber you might have received it already) includes an interview with Masi Oka.

Wonderful interview, lots of spoilers, background information and commentary from one of the most beloved actors on Heroes, Masi Oka.

We suggest you go grab a copy of TV Guide and read the whole thing, in the meantime we offer you here a short -but sweet- snippet.
When announcement was made that David Anders landed the role of Kensei, fans raised in arms: “Impossible!” “Kensei is Japanese!” “He’ll need lots of make-up!”, forgetting -maybe- that this is Heroes, not your average TV show. Masi Oka offers an explanation:

The characters on Heroes will leap forward four months when the show returns on September 24–everyone, that is except Hiro. The time-tripping fanboy, played by Masi Oka, was suddenly teleported to 1671 Japan in the cliff-hanger of last May’s finale. The Season 2 premiere will find him right where we left him–stuck in the middle of samaurai who are about to wage war.

Immediate danger aside, isn’t this Hiro’s dream come true?
Mine, too. It’s the dream of many Japanese boys. We grow up playing samurai like kids in the U.S. play cowboys. Even the crime prodeurals on Japanese TV are set in feudal Japan.

Will you spill some exclusive scoop?
Next season, Hiro meets the legendary warrior Kensei, his hero from childhood, but it turns out the storybooks have exaggerated. Kensei isn’t the kind of man Hiro idolized. This will put Japan’s future at stake, so Hiro has to make this Kensei into the one of legend.

Hayden Panettiere
Teen Dream

WHY HER The breakout star of TV’s hottest new drama, Heroes, Panettiere plays Claire, an unbreakable high school girl who became synonymous with the show when the catchphrase ”Save the cheerleader, save the world!” entered the pop culture lexicon. ”I think it was very clever,” says the New York-born actress, although she admits that calls of ”Hey, cheerleader!” now follow her around Los Angeles. ”But it’s fun. It’s not an obnoxious thing.” Technically speaking, Claire doesn’t actually spend much time shaking pom-poms. ”I told [Heroes creator] Tim Kring I need to cheer at some point,” the actress says with a laugh. ”She wears the outfit all the time!”

George Takei and Masi Oka

WHY THEM As Sulu on Star Trek, Takei, 70, blazed trails for Asian-American actors. As Hiro, time-warping supernerd of Heroes, Oka, 33, is just blazing. It was a stroke of genius and great respect to cast them as father and son on the new show.
